The history of Reiki tells of energies or “keys” that were rediscovered by a man called Dr Mikao Usui, a Buddist monk in the early nineteenth century. Mikao Usui was born on August 15th 1865 in the village of 'Taniai-mura' and later in life became a Christian Minister.

One day a senior student asked Dr Usui, “ Do you believe and accept everything written in the bible?” The answer from Dr Usui was “yes”. The boy then asked “ Why does it say in the bible that we can walk on water and heal sick people, when we can't".

Doctor Usui agreed he had a very valid point and this question, was the seed that started him on a major quest looking for answers. He resigned from his position and moved to the United States of America and received a Doctorate Degree in Scriptures.

After further study he realized he still did not have the answer of how to heal the sick.

Dr Usui then requested to be admitted into the Monastery, to study Buddhism.  When he followed this lead, it led him to the Original Buddist Scriptures, but unfortunately they were written in Sanskrit (an ancient language). Once again, another barrier, as he had to study Sanskrit before being able to access the knowledge.

Finally, he found what he had been looking for, in notes written by an unknown disciple - the teachings of Buddha. Dr Usui found the formula of how Buddha miraculously healed people.

After 7 years Dr Usui knew he was getting closer - he had the knowledge but still could not heal people. After all this he knew he had to continue on regardless of how hard it had been.

The History of Reiki states Dr Usui decided to go up into the mountains in Japan to fast and meditate on the technique required to heal people for 21 days.

He warned it could be very dangerous, or he may loose his life, by his friend the Abbot.

As Dr Usui climbed the scared mountain he collected twenty one stones, when he arrived he placed the twenty ones stones in front on him which he used as a calendar, and as each pass he threw one of the stones away.

He filled his days on the mountains studying the sutras, meditating and singing. As the days passed Dr Usui became tired, stiff, hungry, thirsty and exhausted and still no closer to discovering how to heal the sick.

On the twenty first day as Dr Usui began to head home, he became aware of a beautiful beam of light coming from the heavens that came shooting towards him.

In the history of Reiki it stated that he felt afraid, and was stuck by this light which eventually knocked him over. Then in rapid succession he saw before him like bubbles of light.

These bubbles contained reiki energy which was later transformed into Reiki Symbols which he had been searching for. He had finally found, the "KEY" to the healing of Jesus and Buddha. The symbols burned themselves into his memory.

When the trance was over, Dr Usui no longer felt the physical effects of being on the mountains for 21 days. The tiredness, stiffness, exhaustion and hunger had disappeared.

As he walked down the mountain with the sun shinning on him he stubbed his toe, tearing back the toenail. He jumped with pain and immediately grabbed his toe with his hand. To his amazement the toe stopped bleeding, the pain disappeared and was well on the way to healing.

The History of Reiki includes the story of how he felt as he arrived down from the mountain and stopped at an inn and ordered a Japanese breakfast.

The old man at the stall could see that Dr Usui had been through quite an ordeal, by his physical appearance and clothes. He told Dr Usui it would take a few minutes and suggested he wait on the bench under the tree.

Finally the daughter of the man arrived with his meal. Dr Usui realised she had been crying, and her face was swollen and red on one side.

The history of Reiki includes information of Dr Usui first healing using the sacred Reiki energy. He asked her what was wrong and she admitted she had a toothache for three days.

Dr Usui asked permission if he could touch her cheeks with his hands. Following this within minutes the pain had gone and the swelling began to recede.

The history of Reiki includes the story of Dr Usui returning to the monastery in the evening, and was informed that his dear friend, the Abbot, was in bed suffering from a painful attack of arthritis.

Dr Usui then went and bathed and had something to eat, and then went to see his friend. With his healing hands he relieved his pain.

Dr Usui then returned to heal the poor where beggars begged for healings and a better life. He remained there for 7 years but Dr Usui became aware the same people came back day after day and were not taking responsibility for their own lives and health.

They were happier begging and Dr Usui became disheartened.

He finally left the beggars and returned home to the Monastery where he began healing and teaching throughout Japan. Dr Usui realised there were two aspects of healing which were very important – the healing of the spirit and the responsibility of the receiver.

The history of reiki reveals how over the years Dr Usui passed the "Keys" and the lineage and the history of reiki to Chujiro Hyashi, Hakayo Tagata and Phyllis Furimoto.

Before he passed away he had attuned 16 Master Teachers to ensure that the teachings of Reiki were not lost.

Dr Usui initially taught Reiki by prayer, chants and meditation.  Some of his students were having difficulty learn this method so he introduced the Reiki Symbols as a point of focus.  This is how Reiki Symbols were born.

The History of Reiki states that in later years of  Doctor Usui’s life he returned to the heal beggars - the sick and the poor. Everyone and anyone, everywhere.

Today the Usui Reiki healing system is practised all over the world. Everyone who learns Reiki and the History of Reiki, becomes a part of this great history.

The history of Reiki a verbal story told from teacher to teacher. There are a few slightly different versions been given today. I have included the story of the  history of Reiki, as given to me by my Reiki Master.

The history of Reiki states that at this point in time he had understood that Buddha had the power to heal, so he returned to Japan to study Buddhism. After searching monasteries and asking many question he received some insights from an Abbot at a Zen Monastery.
